Lipomas, Abscesses, and Cysts Removal

What are Lipomas?

Lipomas are fatty growths that are found beneath the skin’s surface. Since they are not cancerous in origin, they are considered harmless to the individual. However, when the lipoma gets larger in size or causes discomfort to the individual, they may benefit by getting it removed.

What are Abscesses?

An abscess is a collection of pus that is mainly formed after a bacterial infection. These lesions can be found anywhere on the body and can prove to be a great source of discomfort for the individual. In addition, if the abscess is not drained and treated in time, it may continue to grow in size and promote the spread of infection in the body.

What are Cysts?

Cysts are sac-like structures that may either contain fluid, air, or other substances. Cysts are commonly found under the skin’s surface; however, they may occur anywhere in the body. While the majority of cysts are benign and non-harmful to the patient, they may consider getting them removed if they grow in size or become painful.

What Can You Expect Before Lipomas, Abscesses, and Cysts Removal Surgery?

Before surgery, you will be guided by the doctor about the details of the procedure that will be used to remove the lesion on your skin. The doctor will also advise you to stop taking certain types of medication – particularly those which increase bleeding risk. These medications may include aspirin and similar blood thinners.

What To Expect During Lipomas, Abscesses, and Cyst Removal Surgery?

Removal of skin lesions like lipomas, cysts, and abscesses can be conducted by a number of procedures, which include:

Lipomas and cysts are removed by making an incision over the lesion and then removing the entire growth and then sending it for pathology testing.  Sometimes the overlying skin must be removed as well if there is excess skin that has developed over a large lesion, or the cyst is attached to the skin. The wound is closed with dissolvable sutures and a sterile dressing is applied over this.  Abscesses are typically treated by making an incision over the infected area to drain the pus.  The wound is then usually packed with gauze to allow the infection to continue to drain and wound to heal from the inside out.  After surgery, these patients are often referred to a special wound care clinic where they are treated until they are completely healed.

What To Expect After Lipomas, Abscesses, and Cysts Removal Surgery?

The recovery after the skin lesion removal depends on the type of procedure performed by the doctor, the size and severity of the skin lesion, and the patient’s health status. The majority of skin lesion removal procedures are not associated with significant post-operative pain; however, some individuals may experience slight swelling or bruising. These may be treated by using over-the-counter pain relievers and pain medicines prescribed by the doctor.
