Anti-Reflux Surgery

What is Reflux?

Reflux is that burning feeling you get in your chest after eating something spicy or drinking something carbonated. It’s not fun, and it can be very uncomfortable.

Reflux is a condition that results in the flow of stomach acid back up into the esophagus. This can cause heartburn, chest pain, and other symptoms. Treatment may start with lifestyle changes, medications, and progress to surgery.

What Is Anti-Reflux Surgery?

Anti-reflux surgery is a medical procedure that is used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). It is intended for people who have chronic GERD symptoms that are not relieved by medication. The surgery helps to keep acid from flowing back up into the esophagus.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Anti-Reflux Surgery?

People who have chronic GERD symptoms that are not relieved by medication are good candidates for anti-reflux surgery. The surgery may also be an option for people who have had a hiatal hernia repaired.

A consultation with a doctor is necessary before deciding if anti-reflux surgery is the right treatment for you.

Consultation And Procedure

At your consultation, you will discuss your health history and symptoms with Dr. Kakarla or Dr. Solis to see if you are a good candidate for the surgery. The procedure for anti-reflux surgery is typically done under general anesthesia. The surgeon creates more of a one-way valve between the esophagus and the stomach such that acid can flow only forward which helps to keep acid from flowing back up into the esophagus. Thanks to our private outpatient surgery center, anti-reflux surgery can be scheduled without any delay.

What Are the Recovery and Results Like?

Returning to normal may take a few weeks or months, depending on your body’s healing power. Most patients feel much better, and they are able to eat and enjoy life without reflux.

Expect to stay in the hospital for about 4 to 6 days, and then spend a month to 6 weeks recovering at home with the open surgical procedure. Laparoscopic surgery will shorten your hospital stay from a few days to none. Most people are able to go home the same day or the next day after their surgery and they are back on their feet and at work in just 2 to 3 weeks. Anti-reflux surgery is safe, and it works. Most people experience relief from their GERD symptoms.
