These may include those affected with severe forms of Chrohn’s Disease, Bowel Obstruction, Ulcerative Colitis, and even Colon Cancer.

What Can You Expect Before A Bowel Surgery?

You will be scheduled for an initial consultation with our surgeon before getting your bowel surgery. The surgeon will evaluate your medical history and assess your current health status to determine if you are the right candidate for this procedure. This is also known as the preoperative assessment. Based on your lifestyle and dietary habits, you may also be advised to follow certain preoperative precautions. These may include discontinuing smoking before the surgery, which can lead to an increased risk of complications with continued tobacco abuse. You may also be asked to alter your medications, particularly the ones that interfere with the body’s healing and increase bleeding time.

What Can You Expect During Bowel Surgery?

The procedure itself is carried out under general anesthesia and involves making an incision in the abdomen and then repairing or removing the affected portion of the bowel. During the surgery, the doctor will operate on the affected or diseased part of the bowel while sparing the unaffected part. For example, during bowel resection surgery, the diseased part of the bowel is removed, after which the two healthy ends are joined together using staples or stitches.

What Is The Recovery For Bowel Surgery Like?

After the completion of the surgery, you will be moved to a recovery room where you will be monitored. Once the anesthesia starts to wear off, you may experience slight discomfort, upon which you will be provided other modes of pain relief to keep your pain. During the days following the surgery, you may experience mild discomfort, particularly in the areas of the incision. However, the symptoms of discomfort are temporary, and you will start to get better within the following seven days. You may also be able to return back to your normal routine after only 2 to 3 weeks following surgery, Please know, everyone is different and so will their recovery.
