Jean-Claude Schwartz, MD, PhD

Breast Cancer and Reconstructive Surgeon

Dr. Schwartz is a recognized national leader in the field of oncoplastic breast surgery. Oncoplastic surgery integrates a complete cancer resection with an immediate plastic surgery reconstruction to avoid deformity, often improving the appearance of the breast.

After graduating with MD and PhD degrees, Jean Claude Schwartz completed his general surgery training at Emory University followed by a breast surgical oncology fellowship at Yale University. After 4 years in private practice, he spent a year studying advanced oncoplastic techniques in New Zealand, Milan, Brazil, Paris and London with the international leaders in oncoplastic surgery.  Dr. Schwartz is exclusively dedicated to breast cancer surgery and reconstruction. He is one of just two surgeons in Georgia and a handful in this country who is capable of removing a breast cancer followed by performing an immediate reconstruction (most other teams require two surgeons- a surgical oncologist and a plastic surgeon).  Patients of Dr. Schwartz usually require just one procedure to complete their cancer surgery and reconstruction which reduces cost and anxiety.  As the only surgeon coordinating treatment, patients are scheduled for surgery without delay and can follow-up with just Dr. Schwartz for any concerns regarding both their breast cancer treatment and reconstructive surgery.

As a cancer survivor, Dr. Schwartz has a special dedication in taking care of patients diagnosed with breast cancer.  He understands and sympathizes with his patients that require surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy for treatment.  During his MD/PhD studies he was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and went through a prolonged course of chemotherapy and radiation but still persevered to complete his studies without delay and even managed to win the Julius Marmar Fellowship, awarded to the graduate student for outstanding PhD studies.  In addition to his interest in taking care of cancer patients, Dr. Schwartz has developed a special interest in reconstructive surgery.  He takes special pride in restoring a woman’s femininity after cancer surgery by providing her the most advanced and innovative surgical techniques available anywhere in the world.  Many of these approaches were developed and first described by Dr. Schwartz.

Dr. Schwartz has published more than 20 peer-reviewed articles in the last several years in leading surgical journals in the area of breast cancer surgery and reconstruction.  He has been invited to write book chapters in the area of oncoplastic surgery. He regularly lectures and teaches at national conferences on breast cancer surgery and reconstruction techniques.  Visiting surgeons from the United States and abroad are routinely present in his operating room to observe his surgeries and the several techniques that he has innovated.   Dr. Schwartz continues to travel across the country and abroad learning the newest techniques to help his patients here in Gwinnett County.
